A few notes:

  • No nomination for Deadpool, not even with the help of “The Dark Knight” rule that bulked the Best Picture nomination from 5 to 10 after the 2007 film’s infamous snub.
  • La La Land ties Titanic (1998) and All About Eve (1950) for most nominations ever with 14 including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
  • Big year for Black Hollywood just a year after #OscarsSoWhite. 3 Black-led films are up for Best Picture nominations and 6 Black actors nabbing nominations, despite way-too-early Oscar hype for contreversial The Birth of a Nation that ended up getting shut out by the Academy.
  • Snubs (other than Deadpool) include Amy Adams (Arrival) for Best Actress, Aaron-Taylor Johnson (Nocturnal Animals) for Best Supporting Actor, and Finding Dory for Best Animated Feature Film.
  • Disney has wrestled back the the Best Animated Film weight away from subsidiary Pixar. The latter has 1 nomination (albeit a win) in the last 4 years as Disney looks primed to win it’s 2nd Oscar in 3 years.

The 89th Academy Awards will air Sunday, February 26, 2017 on ABC.
