Sears has announced that their La Plaza location, an anchor for the shopping mall since 1976, will close their doors “on or about November 1st.” in a letter addressed to McAllen Mayor Jim Darling.
132 employees in all will lose their jobs as a result of the closure, one of the biggest layoffs in the RGV since Convergys closed their doors in Pharr earlier this year.
The news really doesn’t come as a surprise as Simon Property Group had announced earlier this year that Sears would be demolished to make way for 50 to 60 new stores and 8 restaurants in an effort to revamp La Plaza and attract newer vendors. By making the Sears property two stories, La Plaza will have 160,000 SQ FT of property to sell to vendors.
