Former NFL quarterback and Mission alumnus Koy Detmer has just been hired to be the next head coach at Mission High School via school board meeting held today.
Detmer replaces exiting coach Mario Pena, who started off with a 10-2-1 record his first year, but only had 1 winning season in the 6 years that followed. The Eagles are coming off a 4-6 2015 campaign where they finished in the lower-end of the 6A District 30 standings.
For those not old enough to remember, Detmer played QB for the Mission Eagles having record-breaking seasons in passing yardage when the spread offense was still in its infancy in the early 90’s. Detmer earned a scholarship to play at the University of Colorado where he led them to a 10-2 record and a Holiday Bowl win over Washington in his only year starting under center. Currently, he holds Colorado’s career passing touchdown record with 40. His one season at the helm gave Detmer his shot at the NFL, having been drafted in the seventh (7th) round by the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent most of his career playing behind longtime Eagles QB Donovan McNabb.
Interesting story about Detmer, the Philadelphia Eagles once instructed him to fake an injury so he can be placed on IR in a back-ended scheme to circumvent roster restrictions by the league.
Good hire, Mission.
