Earlier today, UTRGV announced their acquisition of HEB Park, renaming it UTRGV Stadium. According to their press release, UTRGV Stadium will serve “as the primary home for the upcoming Vaqueros football program.”
It had previously been reported that Edinburg and UTRGV officials had been in talks of acquiring the 10,000 seat stadium since late 2023 following the abrupt announcement that the Rio Grande Valley Toros FC, whom played their home games at the stadium, were ceasing operations.
The release does not state how much the acquisition cost the City of Edinburg or UTRGV, however, a quick search on Hidalgo County Appraisal District’s website states that UTRGV stadium is currently owned by the City of Edinburg, and was last appraised at approximately $15.5 million.
We can also see that the deed was granted to the City of Edinburg on January 19, 2024.
At the time of this writing, it is unclear whether the deed will be transferred to UTRGV or if it will remain with the City of Edinburg.
UTRGV Football will play an exhibition schedule this Fall with plans to begin official play in the Fall of 2025. According to UTRGV, there have been over 2,800 deposits received for season ticket reservations.
