A Facebook page named “STAND WITH HIDALGO COUNTY” was created sometime last week and I have no fucking clue as to what they’re trying to accomplish.
It’s obvious that the page was created in support of controversial Proposition 1, which if passed, would create a Health Care District in Hidalgo County by means of adding a taxing entity range of $.08/$100 to potentially $.25/$100 on Hidalgo county residents. At the time of this writing, the page has 247 likes and 5 posts. 2 of those posts (which would make up 40% of their posted content) directly call out known anti-Prop 1 advocate George Rice.
They have not posted content since their posting of George Rice’s video of police yesterday at 8:20 AM.
Rice, a U.S. Army Veteran, was featured on the conservative news site Breitbart for his run-ins with Border Health PAC back in May of 2015, so although the page has anonymous ties, it wouldn’t surprise me or anyone else if someone directly or indirectly related to the PAC is involved.
Look, I get that there’s a fine line between harassment and expressing an unpopular (or popular) opinion through whatever way is the most effective for your speech, but for fuck’s sake, what the hell did “Stand With Hidalgo County” look to accomplish here? We at The Bench Wire call people out all the time, typically persons of major political influence such as government officials or attorneys with a state law licence who fuck people over, but Rice is not a public official nor would he be considered someone who is in the “political or public arena” so he’s REALLY not fair game.
Regardless, whether your opponent is conservative/liberal or for/against Prop. 1, throwing shit up on FB and calling a protester, albeit a “passionately aggressive” one, a threat and to “call the police” is a pretty shitty way of attacking the opposition.
Step up, “Stand With”
